How To Root The HTC One X




This guide is designed for people new to rooting and should be easy enough for you to follow.
Disclaimer – As usual I am not responsible if you damage your device so follow this tutorial at your own risk.
With that said lets begin. Ok first off we have to unlock your Bootloader on the HTC Dev site.
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD BACK ALL APPS UP BEFORE DOING THIS AS THIS WILL WIPE YOUR DATA PARTITION, YOUR INTERNAL MEMORY WILL REMAIN INTACT JUST YOUR APPS ETC WILL BE WIPED.
STEP 1 – Visit HTC DEV and create an account for yourself
STEP 2 – Download these FASTBOOT Files
STEP 3 – Make a new folder on your c: drive called fastboot. To do this go to START > Computer > click on C drive then right click in C: drive and select create new folder and rename it fastboot
STEP 4 – Extract the Fastboot.zip File you downloaded in Step 2 and put the contents of the .Zip in your new fastboot folder.
STEP 5 – Visit http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and select “All other Suported Models” and “then begin unlock bootloader”. Tick Both boxes and proceed.
STEP 6 – Now we are going to put your device into Fastboot. To do this power off your device first. Then hold the power and volume down button together. When the menu pops up use the volume keys to navigate to and highlight Fastboot then press the power button to continue.
STEP 7 - Connect your phone up to your PC and go to start and open up a command prompt window. (windows XP – Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK (Windows 7 – Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter) and type the following cd c:\fastboot then fastboot oem get_identifier_token Now select and copy the text as per step 9 on HTC Dev and paste your identifier token and click submit. You will then recieve an Email from HTC Dev with further instruction and your “Unlock_code.bin”.
STEP 8 – Download the “Unlock_code.bin” from your email and stick it in the fastboot folder you created earlier. Open up your command prompt window again and type this fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin You will now press volume up on the new screen and power to confirm.
If you got a to many links error just forget it you have now successfully unlocked your Bootloader WooHoo So now lets get to the other stuff.
Installing Your Custom ClockWorkMod Recovery
STEP 1 – Download the latest CWM from HERE (MD5: 147B081A8FD9216FA62244031E44DF88) and put it in the Fastboot folder you created earlier.
STEP 2 – Power off your phone again and boot into Fastboot as before. Then Plug your phone into PC and open up that command prompt window again.
STEP 3 – Type the following in order cd c:\fastboot then fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img (Please not if your recovery image isnt the 5.8.4.0 img then just yoe the name of yours instead as this is the latest at time of writing)
NOW DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR TURN OFF YOUR DEVICE HOLD POWER AND VOLUME DOWN. NOW CHOOSE RECOVERY AND PRESS POWER TO SELCT AND CLICK THE BACKUP OPTION SO THAT IF ANYTHING EVER GOES WRONG YOU ALWAYS HAVE A COPY OF YOUR ORIGINAL DEVICE STATE.
So now that you have a custom recovery you can now have options
1- Go to XDA HERE and choose a ROM you wish to flash it. All flashing instruction are included on ROM page.
2. Just Root your stock ROM by downloading the latest SuperSU binaries from HERE and install them Via Recovery.

How to block Ads on Android Phones




Warning: ROOT is required to block ads, so your phone must be rooted. Please don't ask me how to root your phone as there are a billion android phones out there and some are harder to root than others.

For those questions the simple answer is this:

1. Go to Google
2. Type in <your phone here> root guide. Or any variation just make sure to include your phone and carrier.
3. Follow whatever guides you find :)


With google recently removing all adblocking apps from the market, anybody with a rooted phone might be wondering "well how am i gonna block the ads now?"

Well there are a few things you can do,

1. If you already have the APK just back it up directly on your phone, either using titanium backup, or any root explorer app that will let you copy and paste the apk file somewhere. It will usually be found in either your system/app or data/app folder from the root of your internal storage, unless you save apps to the SD card.

2. While option number 1 is great, you won't be getting anymore updates for the apps (an example would be jrummy's rom toolbox pro. It has an adblocker built in but he will have to remove it to put his app back on the market, this means that you won't want to update that entire app just to keep the adblocking in place) the solution to this problem is to download one of the following standalone ad blocking apps either AdAway or Adblock Plus my personal choice is AdAway but they are both free :)
How to install these apps?

1. Download either one of those apps, my personal favorite way is to just chrome to phone the download link from my desktop to my phone, that way it'll take me right to the download.

2. Go to your settings menu ---> Security ----> Unknown Sources and check that box. This will allow you to sideload applications on your phone. Without that checked it won't work.

3. Find wherever you saved it too. If you downloaded it via your phones mobile browser it will most likely be in your "downloads" folder in the internal storage.
*Note, there are many different browsers for android, so i can't promise that's exactly where you'll find it, but it'll be wherever your other downloads go*

4. Click on the app and it should take you to an installation screen. Just click through it and it will install.

5. Go into the actual application and make sure it downloads the host sources/turn on the ad blocking.

5a. This step is optional, on AdAway you can add your own host source files, i highly recommend doing so as by default it only has a few. You can find them here the top ones i recommend are:

*Note, the redirection lists will cause google+ not to work, so i recommend not using those*

To add these to AdAway's default list you'll need to go into the application, bring up the settings menu and click "host sources" then click the plus sign in the upper right hand corner and type them in exactly how they appear on the site. After that redownload the host source files and reboot.

*Note, this may also work for Adblock Plus and other adblocking apps but i do not know for sure*

6. Reboot your phone after you've turned on adblocking to ensure everything is working.

And now you're all set with adblocking. This may not block EVERY ad but it'll get the job done :)

*Note, i am sure there are plenty other adblocking apps out there, but these two in my opinion are the better ones*

*Note 2, i highly recommend checking your adblocking app everyday as host source files update and then you can get the updated versions downloaded automatically*

Some of you may already use this app and know what it is. However, I have searched around and couldn't find any tutorials for people who don't know what it is or how to use it. GameCIH is an in game cheat engine, where you can add cheats as you play. Here's how it works:

*** Your device must be rooted *** If your phone is not rooted, check out Tuffs' forum to find out how to root your device http://devicesolver.blogspot.in/2014/02/how-to-root-any-phone-tutorial.html If you have no luck there, search your device using Google.

Step 2: Once installed, open the app, and it should do as follows:

*If Hot-Key shows DISABLED, simply click on DISABLED, then hit the key you want to use as the hot-key, as you can see, I used my search button.

Step 3: Now that GameCIH is installed and ready to go, chose the game you want to mod. For this tutorial, I will be using "Robo Defense". I will be showing you 2 different things I change in this game. First, we will start with money as you are playing the game. Start the game, and as soon as it starts pause it take note of your current money, and hit your hot-key. Then select "Input Number"

Step 4: Input the current money, then hit OK.

Step 5: Back out, back in to the game, and either spend more money, or gain more money, than hit your hot-key again. After that, click on the "!".

***Note- (=) Search for all Unchanged Values, (!) Search for all Changed values, (+) Search for all Increased values, (-) Search for all Decreased values.

Step 6: Hit the "money", than change the value to whatever you wish, than hit "Modify". For this, I just used 9999. Then hit the lock button, to keep the value locked, so you will now have infinite money.

Now, I will show you how to modify your reward points.

Step 1: Go back to the main menu, and go to where you can spend your reward points. Note your reward points, than hit the hot-key.

Step 2: As pointed out above, change the values of both "reward_points" and "value" to "4294 967 295" (<This is the max value you can use with this tool) as shown below. Than be sure to lock each one. (To ensure they changed, I hit the "!", than lock them again)

Step 3: Back out of GameCIH, than go back to the main menu of the game. Now go back to the "Reward Points", and spend as much as you want! (WARNING- In my experience with this game, clicking to fast causes the values to get unlocked, meaning, you will run out of reward points and have to do it again, don't go fast as possible, or it will reset. If it does, no worries, close completely out of the game, and reset both the game and GameCIH, than repeat the 3 steps.) Have fun!

How To Root Any Phone (Tutorial)

Hello. Today I will be teaching you how to root nearly any device. Okay lets get started.


What you are going to want to do is download the things listed below from the app store :
*4shared
*Ministro ll
*Root Checker
Now go ahead and open up the 4shared application.
Then Type "Poot.Apk"
Download the very first one on the top of the page.
Now go ahead and open up "Poot.Apk"
When it opens it will need to install a few things so please be patient.
When it is finished hit "Click Here To Poot"
It will then root your device.
Now you MUST restart your device.
Once it is fully booted back up go ahead an open up "Poot.Apk" one last time.
Hit "Click here to poot" again then exit out of the application.
Now go to the app store and search for "Super User".
Install that application, open it up, then exit out and go to "Root Checker"
Check if your phone is rooted.
If it is not (very rare) re-do the steps.
If so, enjoy your New Rooted Device.

Usually, people get apps for their android device by downloading them from Google Play Store. The downloader gets the app installed for you, without bothering you with unnecessary details like the files required for installation etc. But what if you don’t have access to internet and you want an app installed on your phone? Surely you can’t do so without downloading stuff required for the installation. The solution to this problem is simple - just get the APK package of the desired app, and keep it beforehand for later when you need.


APK stands for Android Package. It’s actually a package which contains all the files necessary for installation. In other words, it’s a ‘standalone’ installer for your app which doesn’t require internet connectivity. You can get APK package of an android application from Google Play Store by simply adding an extension called ‘APK Downloader’ to your Google browser. Here we have a step by step procedure which will tell you how to add APK Downloader to your Google Chrome and subsequently, use it for getting APK packages
Once downloaded, the extension is to be added to your Google Chrome Extensions. To do so, follow these steps.
  • Go to the ‘Tools’ menu of your Chrome and select ‘Extensions’.
  • Locate the file you just downloaded (with extension ‘.crx’)
  • Now drag the file to your Extensions page.
  • For confirmation look for a small Play Store icon on your address bar

How to spy WhatsApp Messenger on Nokia, iPhone & Android



WhatsApp is a cross-platform messing application used by smartphones. It allows users to communicate instant messages and share media via 3G or WiFi with other users on the platform. Back in may 2011 WhatsApp had a security breach when hackers realized that messages were being transmitted unencrypted via plain text which left accounts open for hi-jacking. WhatsApp finally released a security update for this problem and the system became locked down.

In this article i will talk about alternative methods of hi-jacking WhatsApp messages and other protocols using a variety of methods.
The first hack im going to talk about will spoof WhatsApp and have it think you are somebody else allowing you to communicate under an alternative name. This hack works by tricking the WhatsApp Verification Servers by sending a spoofed request for an authorisation code intended for an alternative phone. This method is also known to work on several other IM applications based on iOS, Symbian & Android devices.

SPY 1

Install WhatsApp on your device
WhatsApp now starts a counter where it sends a verification message to its servers. If this verification fails after a specific time then WhatsApp offers alternative methods of verification. A message can be blocked by changing the message center number or pushing the phone into Airplane mode.

Choose verify through SMS and fill in your email address. Once you click to send the SMS click cancel to terminate the call for authorisation to the WhatsApp server.
Next we need to do some SMS-Spoofing
There are numerous ways of doing this for free. A quick google search will pull up a vast amount of services which can spoof email addresses.
If you are using an iPhone use the following details in the SMS spoofer application.
To: +447900347295
From: +(Country code)(mobile number)
Message: (your email address)
If you are using another device then check your outbox and copy the message details into the spoofer application and send the spoofed verification.
You will now receive messages intended for the spoofed number on your mobile device and you can communicate with people under the spoofed number.

  SPY 2

The second attack I’m going to talk about is a little bit more professional. For users who can pull of MITM (Man in the Middle) Attacks this is a sure way to rake in data from a public network. I came across the script at the 0×80 blog so i I tried it on several public networks in Dublin (thanks to the karma code). The amount of data you can pull in from people sitting around you in a short amount of time is quite unreal. The code is written in Python so its nice and simple to work with and edit to make it work for similar chat applications.
You will also need to parse the traffic so check this link: http://www.secdev.org/projects/scapy/
Before you have a look at the code you may want to note that WhatsApp blurts out even more information for us to see. Doing a MITM Attack and peeking at the packets we can see that WhatsApp prints the mobile number and the name of the user your target is speaking with. This is important to note this because this data can be used for some social engineering (calling the person to pull more information from them) or by checking web resources such as Facebook or LinkedIn to find their address, email accounts, websites and what ever else your hunting for.

Turn Your Smartphone into a spy Device

Mobile devices is now very common now a days and mobile devices has changed the way of bi-directional communication. There are many operating system for mobile devices available but the most common and the best operating system for mobile is Android, it is an OS means you can install other applications (software's) on it. In Android application usually called apps or android apps.

The risk of spy by using mobile devices is very common and people are developing and using different apps (application) for their hacking attack. Android has faced different challenges from hacking application and below is the list of application for android spy.
1. SpoofApp

Here is an app that spies at heart could use – SpoofApp. It allows you to use a fake Caller ID – a number that you are free to specify yourself, in order to protect your privacy or to pull a prank on someone. Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? Well, Apple didn’t think so, which is why it never allowed the app to enter its App Store. Google, however, didn’t mind, which is why SpoofApp was available on the Android Market for about two and a half years. However, it was banned from there last year as it allegedly was in conflict with The Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009.This can be useful in social engineering.

2. FaceNiff

Requirements: Android 2.1+ (rooted)
Overview: FaceNiff is an Android app that allows you to sniff and intercept web session profiles over the WiFi that your mobile is connected to.
It is possible to hijack sessions only when WiFi is not using EAP, but it should work over any private networks (Open/WEP/WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK). It’s kind of like Firesheep for android. Maybe a bit easier to use (and it works on WPA2!). Please note that if webuser uses SSL this application won’t work.

3. Penetrate Pro [Root is required.]
The most of the times you scan the Wi-Fi networks available around, they’re protected with key. Penetrate is an app that help you out with that. If the routers of that Wi-Fi networks are encrypted with WEP/WPA it will bring you the keys to access them. This seems a sort of cracking, but the developers says it isn’t, because it’s supposed to get the keys for penetration testing and you should use it only with permission from network owners. Well, apart from those regardings, it does what it says. Check the developer description to know which routers are supported.

Android rooting is the process of allowing users of smartphones, tablets, and other devices running the Android mobile operating system to attainprivileged control (known as "root access") within Android's subsystem.
Rooting is often performed with the goal of overcoming limitations that carriersand hardware manufacturers put on some devices, resulting in the ability to alter or replace system applications and settings, run specialized apps that require administrator-level permissions, or perform other operations that are otherwise inaccessible to a normal Android user. On Android, rooting can also facilitate the complete removal and replacement of the device's operating system, usually with a more recent release of its current operating system.
As Android derives from the Linux kernel, rooting an Android device gives similar access administrative permissions as on Linux or any other Unix-likeoperating system such as FreeBSD or OS X.
Root access is sometimes compared to jailbreaking devices running the AppleiOS operating system. However, these are different concepts. Jailbreaking describes the bypass of several types of Apple prohibitions for the end user: modifying the operating system (enforced by a "locked bootloader"), installing non-officially approved apps via sideloading, and granting the user elevated administration-level privileges. Only a minority of Android devices lock their bootloaders—and many vendors such asHTC, Sony, Asus and Google explicitly provide the ability to unlock devices, and even replace the operating system entirely.[1][2][3]Similarly, the ability to sideload apps is typically permissible on Android devices without root permissions. Thus, it is primarily the third aspect of iOS jailbreaking relating to giving users superuser administrative privileges that most directly correlates to Android rooting.

Description
Rooting lets all user-installed applications run privileged commands typically unavailable to the devices in the stock configuration. Rooting is required for more advanced and potentially dangerous operations including modifying or deleting system files, removingcarrier- or manufacturer-installed applications, and low-level access to the hardware itself (rebooting, controlling status lights, or recalibrating touch inputs.) A typical rooting installation also installs the Superuser application, which supervises applications that are granted root or superuser rights. A secondary operation, unlocking the device's bootloader verification, is required to remove or replace the installed operating system. In contrast to iOS jailbreaking, rooting is not needed to run applications distributed outside of the Google Play Store, sometimes called sideloading. The Android OS supports this feature natively in two ways: through the "Unknown sources" option in the Settings menu and through the Android Debug Bridge. However some carriers, like AT&T, prevent the installation of applications not on the Store in firmware,[4] although several devices (including the Samsung Infuse 4G) are not subject to this rule,[5]and AT&T has since lifted the restriction on several older devices.[6] As of 2012 the Amazon Kindle Fire defaults to the Amazon Appstore instead of Google Play, though like most other Android devices, Kindle Fire allows sideloading of applications from unknown sources,[7] and the "easy installer" application on the Amazon Appstore makes this easy. Other vendors of Android devices may look to other sources in the future. Access to alternate apps may require rooting but rooting is not always necessary. Rooting an Android phone lets the owner modify or delete the system files, which in turn lets them perform various tweaks and use apps that require root access.[8]

Difficulty

In the past, many manufacturers have tried to make "unrootable" phones with harsher protections (like the Droid X), but they're usually still rootable in some way, shape, or form. New phones or phones that had a recent update just do not yet have a root exploit available which usually just take a few months.[9]
In 2011, Motorola, LG Electronics and HTC added security features to their devices at the hardware level in an attempt to prevent users from rooting retail Android devices.[citation needed] For instance, the Motorola Droid X has a security boot-loader that puts the phone in "recovery mode" if a user loads unsigned firmware onto the device, and the Samsung Galaxy S II displays a yellow triangle indicator if the device firmware has been modified.

Process

The process of rooting varies widely by device, but usually includes exploiting a security bug(s) in the firmware (i.e. in Android) of the device, and then copying the su binary to a location in the current process's PATH (e.g. /system/xbin/su) and granting it executable permissions with the chmod command. A supervisor application like SuperUser or SuperSU can regulate and log elevated permission requests from other applications. Many guides, tutorials, and automatic processes exist for popular Android devices facilitating a fast and easy rooting process.
For example, shortly after the HTC Dream (HTC G1)was released, it was quickly discovered that anything typed using the keyboard was being interpreted as a command in a privileged (root) shell. Although Google quickly released a patch to fix this, a signed image of the old firmware leaked, which gave users the ability to downgrade and use the original exploit to gain root access. Once an exploit is discovered, a custom recovery image that skips the digital signature check of a firmware update package can be flashed. In turn, using the custom recovery, a modified firmware update can be installed that typically includes the utilities (for example the Superuser app) needed to run apps as root.
The Google-branded Android phones, the Nexus One, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 as well as their tablet counterparts, the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, can be boot-loader unlocked by simply connecting the device to a computer while in boot-loader mode and running the Fastboot program with the command "fastboot oem unlock".[10] After accepting a warning, the boot-loader is unlocked, so a new system image can be written directly to flash without the need for an exploit.

Industry reaction

Until the early 2010s, the response of tablet and smartphone manufacturers and mobile carriers had typically been unsupportive of third-party firmware development. Manufacturers had expressed concern about improper functioning of devices running unofficial software[11] and related support costs. Moreover, firmware such as CyanogenMod sometimes offers features for which carriers would otherwise charge a premium, such as tethering. As a result, technical obstacles such as locked bootloaders and restricted access to root permissions have commonly been introduced in many devices. For example, in late December 2011, Barnes & Noble andAmazon.com, Inc. began pushing automatic, over-the-air firmware updates, 1.4.1 to Nook Tablets and 6.2.1 to Kindle Fires, that removed users' ability to gain root access to the devices. The Nook Tablet 1.4.1 update also removed users' ability to sideload apps from sources other than the official Barnes & Noble app store (without modding).[12][13] However, as community-developed software began to grow popular in the late 2009 to early 2010,[14][15] and following a statement by the Copyright Office and Librarian of Congress (US) allowing the use of "jailbreaking" mobile devices,[16] manufacturers and carriers have softened their position regardingCyanogenMod and other unofficial firmware distributions, with some, including HTC,[17] Samsung,[18] Motorola[19] and Sony Ericsson,[20] even actively providing support and encouraging development. In 2011, the need to circumvent hardware restrictions to install unofficial firmware lessened as an increasing number of devices shipped with unlocked or unlockable bootloaders, similar to theNexus series of phones. Device manufacturer HTC has announced that it would support aftermarket software developers by making the bootloaders of all new devices unlockable.[11] However, carriers such as Verizon Wireless and more recently AT&T have continuously blocked OEM's such as HTC or Motorola from releasing retail devices with unlocked bootloaders, opting instead for "developer edition" devices which are only sold un-subsidized, off contract. Similar in practice to Nexus devices, but for a premium and with no contract discounts.

Legality

Rooting a device involves circumventing its technological protection measures (in order to allow root access and running alternative software), so its legal status is affected by laws regarding circumvention of digital locks, such as laws protecting digital rights management (DRM) mechanisms. Many countries do not have such laws, and some countries have laws including exceptions for rooting.
International treaties have influenced the development of laws affecting rooting. The 1996 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Copyright Treaty requires nations party to the treaties to enact laws against DRM circumvention. The American implementation is the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), which includes a process for establishing exemptions for non-copyright-infringing purposes such as rooting. The 2001 European Copyright Directive implemented the treaty in Europe, requiring member states of theEuropean Union to implement legal protections for technological protection measures. The Copyright Directive includes exceptions to allow breaking those measures for non-copyright-infringing purposes, such as to run alternative software,[21] but member states vary on the implementation of the directive.

Australia

In 2010, Electronic Frontiers Australia said that it is unclear whether rooting is legal in Australia, and that anti-circumvention laws may apply.[22] These laws were strengthened by the Copyright Amendment Act 2006.

Canada

In November 2012, Canada amended its Copyright Act with new provisions prohibiting tampering with digital locks, with exceptions including software interoperability.[23] Rooting a device to run alternative software is a form of circumventing digital locks for the purpose of software interoperability.
There had been several efforts from 2008-2011 to amend the Copyright Act (Bill C-60, Bill C-61, and Bill C-32) to prohibit tampering with digital locks, along with initial proposals for C-11 that were more restrictive,[24] but those bills were set aside. In 2011, Michael Geist, a Canadian copyright scholar, cited iPhone jailbreaking as a non-copyright-related activity that overly-broad Copyright Act amendments could prohibit.[25]

Europe

The Free Software Foundation Europe argues that it is legal to root or flash any device. According to the European Directive 1999/44/CE, replacing the original operating system with another does not void the statutory warranty that covers the hardware of the device for two years unless the seller can prove that the modification caused the defect.[26]

India

India's copyright law permits circumventing DRM for non-copyright-infringing purposes.[27][28] Parliament introduced a bill including this DRM provision in 2010 and passed it in 2012 as Copyright (Amendment) Bill 2012.[29] India is not a signatory to the WIPO Copyright Treaty that requires laws against DRM circumvention, but being listed on the US Special 301 Report "Priority Watch List" applied pressure to develop stricter copyright laws in line with the WIPO treaty.[27][28]

Singapore

Rooting might be legal in Singapore if done to provide interoperability and not circumvent copyright, but that has not been tested in court.[30]

United Kingdom

The law Copyright and Related Rights Regulations 2003 makes circumventing DRM protection measures legal for the purpose of interoperability but not copyright infringement. Rooting may be a form of circumvention covered by that law, but this has not been tested in court.[21][31] Competition laws may also be relevant.[32]

United States

Under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, rooting is illegal in the United States, except for phones by exemption "at least through 2015",[33] although despite the Copyright Office's legal exemption.

In 2010, in response to a request by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the U.S. Copyright Office explicitly recognized an exemption to the DMCA to permit rooting.[34][35] In their ruling, the Library of Congress affirmed on July 26, 2010 that rooting is exempt from DMCA rules with respect to circumventing digital locks. DMCA exemptions must be reviewed and renewed every three years or else they expire.
On October 28, 2012, the US Copyright Office updated their exemption policies. The rooting of smartphones continues to be legal "where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of [lawfully obtained software] applications with computer programs on the telephone handset." However, the U.S. Copyright office refused to extend this exemption to tablets, arguing that the term "tablets" is broad and ill-defined, and an exemption to this class of devices could have unintended side effects.[36][37][38]The Copyright Office also renewed the 2010 exemption for unofficially unlocking phones to use them on unapproved carriers, but restricted this exemption to phones purchased before January 26, 2013.[37]
Tim Wu, a professor at Columbia Law School, argued in 2007 that jailbreaking is "legal, ethical, and just plain fun."[39] Wu cited an explicit exemption issued by the Library of Congress in 2006 for personal unlocking, which notes that locks "are used by wireless carriers to limit the ability of subscribers to switch to other carriers, a business decision that has nothing whatsoever to do with the interests protected by copyright" and thus do not implicate the DMCA.[40] Wu did not claim that this exemption applies to those who help others unlock a device or "traffic" in software to do so.[39] In 2010 and 2012, the U.S. Copyright Office approved exemptions to the DMCA that allow users to root their devices legally.[41] It is still possible to employ technical countermeasures to prevent rooting or prevent rooted phones from functioning.[42] It is also unclear whether it is legal to traffic in the tools used to make rooting easy.[42]

New Zealand

New Zealand's copyright law allows the use of technological protection measure (TPM) circumvention methods as long as the use is for legal, non-copyright-infringing purposes.[43][44] This law was added to the Copyright Act 1994 as part of the Copyright (New Technologies) Amendment Act 2008.
